I really love all your work, especially this fencer because I fence and so he appeals to me. The only thing about him is he seems so static, especially when compared to the rest of your body of work. To me, a fencer is fluid and always in motion and he seems a little frozen. I love your black and white balance here though, it is lovely and makes the piece dramatic. The hilt design is also very lovely and well done.
thanks for the thoughtful response, for the most part these black and whites are my lunch break or inbetween work sketches I do, so its like a 15-20 min usually. I'm limited in that sense so I try and get as much in as i can. hence a lot of them lack polishing and whatnot. I can see the static pose now, thanks for the crit
Your welcome. I'm highly impressed by your speed, I wish I could manage half as well taking twice as long. You have an incredible amount of detail for such a quick piece.
The detail is really an illusion, more or less its just a bunch of squigly lines that make it seem like a lot of detail and time went into it. Of course practice helps you learn what looks detailed and what doesn't. But this technique is great for laying down the whole initial idea without losing interest in the minor technical work. Speed sketches are the way to go, try em out!
